3 separate incidences of fire in city, 1 dead
THREE fires broke out in the city yesterday with one man reported to have died.
A fire broke out in a three-story building at an old neighborhood in Huangpu District yesterday morning in which a 59-year-old man, surnamed Xu, died.
The fire started in Xu’s house on the second floor, local firefighters told Shanghai Daily. They received information about the fire around 9:15am, and extinguished it 15 minutes later. Firefighters found Xu in a room on the second floor. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.
Neighbors said the man was at home with his daughter, while his wife was at a nearby mobile store when the fire broke out between 8:30am and 9am. The daughter managed to get away after being alerted by the neighbors but her father could not.
A woman running a drugstore in the community claimed that the man was an alcoholic which probably made it difficult for him to escape.
Shanghai Daily found two fire extinguishers outside the building but while some neighbors said they were too nervous and scared to use them, others said they did not know they were extinguishers at all. Sprinklers had also been installed in the old building five years ago under a special government program. Other residents in the building have been moved to nearby hotels.
Another fire broke out at noon in a temporary shed of a construction site for the Metro Line 12 station at the intersection of Weihai Road and Maoming Road in Jing’an District. No one was hurt in the fire.
The third fire happened at 4am in a community on Yixian Road in Baoshan District. Residents said the fire started in a pile of rubbish at the community gate.
Investigations are underway for causes of the fire.
