3,000 attend cancer park event

ABOUT 1,000 breast cancer survivors and 2,000 of their supporters attended two family run and walk events in Century Park in Pudong on Saturday.

This was the fifth time that the More Than Aware 5 kilometers and 2km events were held.

For the first time, runners in America, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Italy participated in the More Than Aware global run held on the same day.

There were cheers and laughter as the families and friends gathered — many of them wearing pink and green.

Shen Zhiying, head of Changning District branch of Shanghai Cancer Recovery Club, which More Than Aware partners with, came with about 50 members of the club. She had breast cancer 20 years ago.

“We love jogging in parks and practicing tai chi together. All of us are fighting for tomorrow by being optimistic and never giving up.”

Women account for 65 percent of the 16,000 members of Shanghai Cancer Recovery Club.

Tami Dyer, a long-time member of More Than Aware, said “we’re touched and inspired by people from Shanghai Cancer Recovery Club who actively help cancer survivors like themselves, and we in More Than Aware make great effort to help them too.”
