31 charged over fake products

CITY prosecutors have charged 31 people involved in 19 cases of producing or selling bogus goods worth more than 32.16 million yuan (US$4.7 million) in the run up to World Consumer Rights Day, said the Shanghai People's Prosecutors' Office yesterday.

In one case, a worker surnamed Xu of a local biological company produced fake medical injections. Xu sold 46 bottles of the bogus drug to three people for more than 90,000 yuan. Luwan District Prosecutors' Office charged him with producing and selling fake goods.

City prosecutors have charged 197 people involved in 111 cases that threatened consumers' health and rights since the last World Consumer Rights Day, officials said.

Luxury leisure goods such as golf clubs and balls with famous brands were also frequently found to be fakes, as well as the usual suspects: fake cigarettes, fake wine and fake watches.

Suspects usually rent warehouses or residences to manufacture or store bogus goods. Prosecutors advised locals to take better care when leasing property to others.
