4 baby feeding bottle firms lose licenses
FOUR Shanghai baby bottle manufacturers have had their business licenses revoked because their plastic feeding bottles release harmful chemicals.
The local companies are among the 48 manufacturers nationwide disqualified by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
Their polycarbonate baby feeding bottles contain bisphenol A (BPA), an organic compound.
Polycarbonate feeding bottles have been banned in China because BPA releases harmful chemicals during heating.
Foreign studies found BPA can disturb human metabolism, affect babies' immune systems and lead to premature puberty. It has also been linked to cancer.
The local companies are the Shanghai Longcheng Commodity Co Ltd, the Shanghai Pinguan Plastic Material Industry Co Ltd, Aideli Shanghai Appliances for Women and Infants Co Ltd and the Pigeon Shanghai Co Ltd.
Officials said companies that only produced PC bottles will probably be shut down permanently, while others will have to apply for new production licenses.
The Ministry of Health has banned the production of PC bottles from this month and sales will be forbidden from September.
Local industrial and commercial authorities said they will inspect the market before September, to ensure that PC bottles won't be on the shelves.
A European Union ban on the use of BPA in plastic bottles for babies came into effect in March, arousing public concern in China.
Following the EU announcement, some retailers and producers in the city withdrew PC products unilaterally.
Meanwhile, almost all online vendors claim that their baby feeding products are BPA-free.
On Taobao.com, China's leading e-commerce platform, vendors said their bottles - which come from Europe - and North America, are made of silica gel or glass.
