4 cases of child poisoning blamed on accidental herbicide intake reported in 1 week at same hospital

SHANGHAI Children’s Medical Center said it received four children between 2 and 9 years old, who were accidentally poisoned by herbicide just within one week and warned parents to arouse awareness.

All the four children suffered poisoning of paraquat, a highly toxic chemical with over 90 percent of fatality if being taken orally.

A family in rural Nanhui area suffered sickness after eating vegetable in their own farm.

The boy was sent to Shanghai Children’s Medical Center with serious belly ache.

Investigation found their neighbor used paraquat in their own farm and some herbicide flown onto the family’s vegetable.

Another family suffered the same accident. Two children felt sick after eating tomatoes grown in their own farm and paraquat also flew from neighbor’s farm.

In the third case, a man kept paraquat at home without properly storage. His 2-year-old boy found the bottle and played with it. He opened the cap and sprayed some chemicals onto his skin. He felt sick after licking the liquid and was sent to the hospital at once.

“It is rare that we received four similar cases in a row within one week and all doctors felt nervous whenever learning they were poisoned by paraquat,” said Dr Ren Hong from the hospital’s department of intensive care medicine. “Fortunately, these children only took very low amount and the chemical was dilute liquid. Paraquat can be absorbed by the body through skin, respiratory and digestive system and it can enter all organs after two hours. There is no remedy for the chemical.”

All the four children are discharged after treatment. But they should stay home for three weeks' observation and also have to make regular hospital visits to ensure the liver and kidney condition.
