4 delivery men detained for check fraud

Four delivery men who worked for an e-commerce company and tried to exploit a payment loophole have been detained, Qingpu District police said yesterday.

The four, delivery staff of, an e-commerce company backed by Tencent,  are being investigated for fraud after issuing fake bank checks as payments for goods worth 310,000 yuan (US$51,056) bought from their own company.

They placed six orders for 10 pieces of electronic goods including watches, cellphones and laptops from Yixun in late November, and chose the option of paying by checks on arrival.

The delivery address for the goods was an electronic shopping center in Qingpu District. On November 23, they paid a stranger 200 yuan to pick up the goods for them.

The stranger was given nine counterfeit checks which was to be given to the guy after receiving the goods. They then waited  for a buyer they had contacted before in a house in Qingpu.

Yixun reported the matter to police on November 27. The four delivery guys were caught on November 30.

The suspects admitted using fake checks and were detained by police and all the goods were returned to the company.

One suspect, surnamed Huang, told police that they hit upon the idea after making a similar bank check payment delivery in June.

Huang made a delivery to a customer who paid by check, which turned out to be a bad check. Huang was ordered by the company to contact the customer, who then paid in cash.

But Huang felt it was a loophole in the company’s payment system and wanted to use it to his advantage.

He said the authenticity of the checks cannot be verified at the time of the delivery.

He thought if a customer cannot be reached after the checks are found to be fake, the company won’t be able to do much.

Yixun said they are working to fix the loophole in its payment procedure.
