4 detained after fatal falling sign tragedy
FOUR people are now in custody following the collapse of shop signboard on Nanjing Road E. which killed three people, Huangpu District police announced yesterday.
The signboard of Adventure Castle, a souvenir shop near Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall and the Bund, some of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, collapsed at around 9:45pm on August 12.
Three people in charge of the shop, Pan, Li, and Chen, were detained soon after the incident.
According to the police, the sign was renovated in June 2015 by Shanghai Rongjing Industrial. Not qualified to do the work, they failed to assess the risks involved.
An aluminum and plastic panel and other parts of the previous shop front which should have been removed were left in place. New panels were installed directly on top of them. Spotlights were installed at the bottom of the new sign.
Police said the multilayer aluminum-plastic panels on the frame of the signboard fell off on the night of the tragedy — previous reports stated it was the bottom frame that came off.
Wang, the person legally responsible for Rongjing Industrial, is in detention on the same charges as the other three.
