4 given jail terms for selling fake handbags
FOUR people have been sentenced to prison terms after being found guilty of selling counterfeit handbags and luggage at a market in downtown Shanghai.
The defendants all ran stalls at the Hancity Fashion & Accessories Plaza on Nanjing Road W., which is known locally as the “fake market” for the wide range of replica items on sale there.
The four were tried at Shanghai No. 3 Intermediate People’s Court and given prison terms of between 10 months and two years, the court said yesterday.
The vendors were identified during a police raid on the market, though none of them was on the premises at the time. After being informed of the investigation, the defendants handed themselves in, the court said.
Police discovered about 1,000 items at the four stalls that were later found to be counterfeit versions of luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Prada.
When Shanghai Daily visited the market yesterday there were plenty of stallholders offering goods that appeared to be fake versions of famous-name brands.
