4 hurt as fruit shop inspection turns sour
SEVERAL employees of a fruit shop were taken in for questioning on Tuesday following an altercation with urban management officers that left four of the officials seriously injured, police said yesterday.
The alleged assaults took place in two incidents outside the shop on Ao’men Road in Putuo District.
Yuan Shouren, the head of an urban management team, told police that the first attack happened about 9:10am on Tuesday after he asked the owner of the store to move some boxes that had been placed on the steps of a neighboring property.
While the officials were filming the process, “four or five” men came out of the shop and attacked them, Yuan said.
Police arrived on the scene and order was restored.
However, when a second management team returned to the store about 11am they too were attacked by workers wielding iron bars and wine bottles. One official was knocked unconscious and three others were badly hurt, police said.
An unspecified number of men were taken into custody for questioning, they said.
Meanwhile, the owner of a barbecue restaurant in Putuo who was wanted for questioning in connection with a knife attack on six urban management officials on Saturday handed himself in to police yesterday.
The officials were allegedly attacked by a group of people when they asked the owner of the restaurant to move a large cooking pot that was blocking the pavement.
One of them remains in hospital, but the others have since been sent home.
Police detained most of the people suspected of carrying out the attack, but the restaurant owner initially eluded them, officers said.
