4 jailed for selling fake drugs

FOUR people have been sent to prison for selling counterfeit medicines and health tonics online, the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration said yesterday.
The four, all of whom worked for the Shanghai Haojie E-commerce Co, were found guilty at the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court of selling more than 3,000 fake pills and two unlicensed health tonics that were shown to have a high heavy metal content.
Liao Jinjing, the company’s legal representative, and colleagues Liang Haibing, Liang Haixiang and Xu Miao were each sentenced to between one and two years in prison, and fined between 20,000 (US$3,250) and 40,000 yuan.
According to the China Food and Drug Administration, only licensed companies can sell drugs online, and even they are restricted to over-the-counter medicines. Authorized retailers must also display their license details on their websites.
