425,700 counterfeit products destroyed
SHANGHAI industrial and commercial authorities yesterday destroyed more than 425,700 fake products, including clothing, purses and cell phones, all of them bearing world-famous brand names.
Fake Louis Vitton, Burberry, Armani and North Face clothes and purses and fake iPhones were destroyed.
The products were seized during raids in the city, said the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial -Administrative Bureau.
Since last October, the bureau has handled more than 681 cases of manufacturing and selling of counterfeited goods, through which 24 suspects have been handed over to police, officials said.
Besides clothing and digital products, which are the two biggest markets for producers of fakes, auto parts and household electric appliances have been frequently duplicated. Some convenience stores and supermarkets were also deemed to have been infringing on copyrights, especially in suburban areas, as some store owners had designed their main displays to look- -almost the same as well-known local brands.
Last year three fake Trust Mart supermarkets were detected in Fengxian District.
They not only "copied" Trust Mart's name, but also it's signage and store design, said the bureau.
"Fake products not only violate intellectual property rights, but may also harm people's health as they are made of low-quality or even harmful materials," said Sui Bo, a bureau official.
This year the bureau will continue cracking down on fake-manufacturing facilities and strengthen the monitoring of markets, officials said.
