48 detained for links to US$161,000 ‘gift’ scam
FORTY-EIGHT people suspected of being part of a gang involved in a 1 million yuan (US$161,000) nationwide telephone scam have been detained, Shanghai police said yesterday.
More than 100 of the alleged victims were residents of Shanghai, they said.
The group’s ringleader is a man surnamed Sun, who in January set up a call center in Xinyu, east China’s Jiangxi Province, police said.
Sun is accused of recruiting more than 70 people to cold-call people across the country. Posing as representatives of well-known firms, the salespeople sought to convince victims they had been chosen to receive a gift package worth thousands of yuan, police said.
In return, the recipients were asked to pay for the delivery of the items, which in most cases was between 300 and 600 yuan.
When the victims opened the parcels, however, they found the contents were almost worthless, police said.
Over the course of about four months, the gang sent out tens of thousands of packages and collected about 1 million yuan from their victims, they said.
The courier firm used to deliver the parcels was party to the alleged crime, police said.
The 48 suspects were rounded up and detained in Xinyu on April 20.
