48 illegal rooftop buildings pulled down
THE developer and property management company of a high-end apartment complex in the city’s Minhang District are facing a 1 million yuan (US$162,000) bill for the demolition of 48 illegal structures.
The unauthorized buildings — erected by residents on the roofs of several blocks at the Overseas Chinese Town development in Pujiang Town — were yesterday torn down by six demolition teams working for the district government, Xinmin Evening News reported.
Local authorities were alerted to the structures by a radio show that aired last week, after which district chief Zhao Zhuping ordered their removal.
More than 700 people, including law enforcement officials, were involved in the operation, the cost of which will be charged to the developer and property manager, Pujiang authorities were quoted as saying.
Most of the structures were built by residents to provide extra living space, but they were erected in public areas and blocked emergency escape channels, the report said.
