5 1/2-year term for insurance fraud
A man who defrauded 24 insurance companies out of nearly 190,000 yuan (US$30,000) by faking 179 traffic accidents was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison by the Minhang District People's Court yesterday.
The convict, surnamed Deng, was also fined 30,000 yuan for insurance fraud. Deng forged a motorcycle vehicle license and insured the motorcycle with 24 insurance companies, all of which were victimized by Deng's scam. Between December 2006 and July 2010, Deng pretended to have 179 accidents and demanded compensation totaling more than 187,000 yuan from insurance companies including People Insurance Company of China and China Pacific Insurance Co, two major insurers in the country.
