5 WeChat accounts shut, 13 suspended
SHANGHAI authorities yesterday ordered the shutting down of five WeChat public accounts and a 30-day suspension of 13 others for spreading rumors that a new policy was being introduced to tighten the real estate market.
Those WeChat accounts allegedly featured misinformation that the local government would increase down payments for some home buyers starting this month.
Government officials denied last week that any such new measures were being considered.
The five accounts to be shut down are “zjshanghailoushi,” “CREF-EliteClub,” “hanwenlong--ish,” “shanghailord” and “shangshanghaixm.”
Among the suspended accounts are those run by some of the largest news portals in China, including sina.com, sohu.com and ifeng.com, as well as the official accounts of real estate agencies such as Lianjia, Baoyuan and Centaline.
WeChat is a popular instant messaging service in China.
The authorities can punish instant messaging service users with restrictions, suspensions and permanent bans for spreading misinformation, according to regulations governing Internet services.
