5 arrested over power line theft
FIVE men who allegedly caused a blackout that hit more than 1,300 residents in an attempt to steal underground power lines have been arrested for damaging electricity equipment, according to Songjiang District People’s Procuratorate.
The incident occurred in late May when the five, who took an outsourcing job to bury a new power line at a work site in Chedun Town, dug nearby for an old one to sell it, prosecutors said.
The men used a hacksaw to take the wire, prosecutors said.
But it sparked and they heard a loud bang, like an explosion. They then realized they had mistakenly cut a high-voltage 10 kilovolt line.
As result, more than 1,300 residents lost power for several hours, prosecutors said.
Police caught the men soon after the incident. According to a local electricity supplier, old wires can be used as a backup and are often salvaged for this purpose.
