5 fined for operating ‘black cabs’ through Didi Taxi

Five people were each fined 10,000 yuan (US$1,609) for operating “black cabs” through the popular app Didi Taxi, the Shanghai Traffic Commission said today.

The commission said they were investigating seven others suspecting of the same offense and had confiscated 12 vehicles.

“None of the vehicles were registered with the commission like standard taxis and the drivers weren’t licensed for business,” said Yang Xiaoxi, the commission’s deputy director. “This essentially means they were operating ‘black cabs’.”

He added the commission would continue cracking down on the illegal business.

Didi Taxi faces up to a 100,000 yuan fine if it continues to offer unlicensed drivers and vehicles, the commission said.

Didi Taxi declined to comment, but its Special Taxi service is still available with its smartphone app. The service is popular as drivers wear a uniform, are well mannered and provide drinks, face towels, umbrellas and free mobile phone chargers.

The service is also available in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Xiamen.
