5 gun dealers get prison sentences

FIVE men have been sentenced to prison terms of between three and 11 years for illegally storing and trading gun parts, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.

The longest sentence was handed down to a 19-year-old Beijing resident identified as Zhang, who was found guilty of employing a company to produce gun barrels, which he stored at his home in the city’s Changping District.

Last year, Zhang sold more than 100 barrels to two men from central China’s Henan Province, both surnamed Wei, who were living in the Qingpu District of Shanghai at the time, the court said.

The namesakes, aged 21 and 23, were caught by police at their home in April last year, where officers found 499 gun parts. Zhang was arrested three weeks later by Beijing police, who seized more than 17,000 parts.

The two Weis, one of whom was sentenced to 10 years and the other to 10 years and three months, were also found guilty of buying more than 100 gun barrels last year from a 27-year-old Shanghai resident surnamed Zhu.

Zhu, a native of Anhui Province, had stolen the parts from his employer, Fengxian District-based Shanghai Gongzi Machinery Co, which manufactures air guns, the court said.

Zhu was charged also with buying 50 gun barrels from a work colleague surnamed Chen, who also hails from Anhui.

Chen, 34, was found guilty of stealing 123 barrels from Gongzi and storing them at his home.

Zhu was caught on April 30 in a hotel in Pudong, while Chen was arrested two days later at work. Both men were sentenced to three years in prison.
