59 jailed for telephone swindle

FIFTY-NINE members of a criminal gang have been sentenced to prison terms of between eight and 38 months for their roles in a telecom fraud, Shanghai Pudong People’s Court said yesterday.
Some of them were also fined up to 5,000 yuan (US$760).
The group operated from east China’s Anhui Province, but targeted people in Shanghai, the court said. Between March and May last year it defrauded at least 231 people out of more than 53,000 yuan.
The victims were tricked into paying for products after being contacted by people posing as customer service workers from health centers, travel agencies and telecom companies, the court said.
