6 'ice' dealers sentenced

SIX drug dealers in two cases have received sentences ranging from life imprisonment to death with reprieve, Shanghai Railway Transport Intermediate Court said yesterday.

In both cases methamphetamine - also known as "ice" - was seized, judges said. The court was designated by the Shanghai Higher People's Court to handle the cases.

In one case, Li Xiaoqin, 35, a Sichuan Province farmer, and Liao Jianliang, 30, an unemployed local, entrusted Cao Yongkuan, another Sichuan man, to bring drugs from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, for them.

Having brought 200 grams of ice to Shanghai days earlier, on March 10 Cao brought back almost 600 grams of the drug and arranged to meet Li at a foot massage parlor. He was detained there by police. Liao and Li were caught later. The trio received life sentences for trafficking and trading drugs.

In the other case, Xu Xiaochun and Lu Juhua, both 40-year-old unemployed locals, were stopped while driving on the Middle Ring Road near Tianshan Road W. on January 21. Police uncovered 1 kilogram of ice and small amounts of other drugs.

The pair confessed that they were on their way to make a deal. Another man in the car, Wei Zucai, had been sent to guide them. Xu and Lu were sentenced to death with a reprieve of two years for trading and transporting drugs. Wei was jailed for life.
