6 people held following raids on strip clubs in Songjiang

THE owner of an entertaiment venue in Songjiang District and the leader of an “erotic” dance troupe were yesterday detained on criminal charges for allegedly staging a strip show, police said.

Four dancers were sentenced to 14 days’ detention and fined 500 yuan (US$80) apiece in connection with the same incident, they said, without elaborating.

The announcement came after law enforcement officials in Songjiang said earlier yesterday that they had launched a two-month crackdown against alleged strip joints after watching a TV news feature on the subject.

In a report broadcast on Shanghai TV on Monday evening, a reporter spoke to a man outside the Jinhui Entertainment Square club in Jiuting Town who claimed to have links to a troupe of “erotic dancers.”

Inside the club, a strip show was in full swing. The man said customers had paid 45 yuan to see the 30-minute show.

The reporter — giving up his undercover status — then called the police to report the “crime.” By the time officers arrived on the scene, however, the dancers had all left the stage, and a well-dressed singer had taken their place.

Likewise, many of the people earlier filmed watching the dancers were now absent from the scene.

Sun Yan, head of the law enforcement team at the Culture, Radio, Film and TV Administration in Songjiang, told Shanghai Daily that he is working with the police to investigate the incident.

Under Chinese law, dance troupes and venues that stage “obscene shows” can be fined up to 100,000 yuan and face being detained for up to 15 days.

Audience members are usually given “moral education,” police said.

“We only take action in cases where the performers are partly or completely nude,” said Zhang Guohua, a police officer in Songjiang.

Sun said that one of the biggest problems is catching people in the act.

“It’s difficult because the venues know what our officials look like, so as soon as they see us coming they tell the girls to put their clothes back on,” he said.
