7 ‘female’ marathon runners were men
SEVEN men who registered as women for last Sunday’s Shanghai International Marathon had their results canceled for using a false identity.
They were caught out by pictures taken at the finish, which showed their bib numbers were for the women’s race.
“Referee reports, videos, pictures, and runners’ tip-offs showed that runners with bib numbers of 3427, 5346, 30220, 30642, 30882, 30885 and 50334 violated regulations by having male participants running in women’s competition,” the organizing committee said on its official website.
“We decided to cancel these runners’ results and ban them from participating in the 2017 and 2018 Shanghai International Marathon. China Athletic Association has also been informed.”
According to the women’s marathon results, runners 30220 and 5346 completed the race in 19th and 21st places respectively.
In similar incidents at other marathon events, both in China and abroad, some runners who had to withdraw from their race because of injury, then passed their number onto friends or relatives or had sold their registered place to other runners who had failed to be selected.
The 2016 Shanghai marathon had a total of 38,000 runners.
