8 detained after raid on illegal poker den

EIGHT people have been detained on suspicion of running “gambling parties” in Shanghai, police said yesterday.
More than 50 million yuan (US$8 million) was wagered at the parties in a single month, they claimed.
The alleged ringleader of the operation is a man surnamed Xu, who advertised the events via social networking sites like WeChat and Momo, police said, adding that most of his patrons were young professionals who played poker in an apartment near the Lujiazui business district.
The suspects also provided catering services, loans and insurance services, police claimed.
The gang allegedly admitted to running 20 gambling parties last month, from which they made 4 million yuan in commission fees.
The suspects were detained following a raid on the apartment last week.
Police also claim to have found nine boxes of gaming chips.
Six alleged patrons were also taken into custody, police said.
