8 held over 3m yuan rent car loan scam
EIGHT suspects have been detained in connection with a racket where cars rented from a peer-to-peer network were sold, police said yesterday.
Twelve cars, together worth more than 3 million yuan (US$483,000), were recovered, said officers.
According to police, the suspects said they sold them for about 700,000 yuan after dismantling their GPS systems.
Police didn’t reveal the name of the peer-to-peer car rental business, but said it is headquartered in Beijing and has a presence in other cities, including Shanghai.
Three suspects, surnamed Han, Fu and Zhang, are said to have targeted people in online chat rooms looking for loans.
They would offer loans, on the condition that the person would first rent a car from the peer-to-peer car rental business and hand over the keys to them.
But once the car keys were handed over, the gang would look to sell the vehicle — which could not be traced to them.
And those seeking the loan usually ended up not being paid either.
While some of those who took up the loan offer were unaware of the scam, others became accomplices, and five have been detained, police said.
