9 held for putting fake brand labels on fruit

NINE suspects have been detained for selling fake fruit brand stickers at farmers’ markets — with over 2 million stickers seized in recent raids in three districts, police said yesterday.
Investigation started in March when Pudong police received a complaint from an importer that fruit purporting to be of the brand he bought was being sold at inflated prices in a Pudong market.
Shanghai Daily understands that kiwi fruit branded Zespri from New Zealand was in fact local produce and was being sold at wholesale agricultural markets in Beicai Town.
Police found that vendors who sold the kiwi fruit bought fake stickers from a stand run by a man surnamed Chen, also operating in Beicai.
Chen, who is now at the detention center in Pudong, said he bought the fake stickers from a printing company in February at 0.10 yuan (1.50 US cents) per sheet of 64 stickers and sold them on at 1 yuan per sheet to vendors.
Chen said he had previously bought fake stickers online. He added that he made about 12 yuan a day selling the fake stickers.
Besides stickers for the kiwi fruit brand, Chen’s inventory held about 130,000 stickers when police raided his stand. There were false stickers for other foreign and domestic fruit brands.
Other suspects involved were from Minhang and Qingpu districts.
Tang Jian, the police officer in charge of the case, said fruit vendors who evidence showed had bought the fake stickers from Chen and other suspects had been fined, and investigation is continuing.
