9 held for selling fake products
SHANGHAI police have detained 9 people for manufacturing and selling fake home textile products of popular brand Mercury online.
Police estimated that the gang made profits of more than 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million) by selling the fake products on taobao.com, one of the largest online shopping websites in China.
The gang set up six shops online with the names Mercury (Shui Xing in Chinese) incorporated in them with the intention of confusing consumers. Each of the shops raked in several million yuan between November last year to February this year.
Around year-end and months before the Chinese New Year, sales of home products soar as people flock to buy gifts or replace old stuff at home.
Police busted the gang in five locations in Haimen City in neighboring Jiangsu Province and caught more than 20 people in separate raids in February.
From their manufacturing base, police found more than 20,000 counterfeit products of different brands.
“They sold the products, which usually cost between 200 to 300 yuan each, for around 70 to 80 yuan,” a police officer surnamed Wu from Fengxian District said.
Mercury reported to the police about the fake shops in January.
