93 laid low by food poisoning
ALMOST 100 employees of a Dutch architectural company in Minhang District suffered food poisoning after eating lunch in the company canteen yesterday, the government said.
The Minhang District Food and Drug Administration said the outbreak was related to nitrite contamination of food in the staff restaurant of Hunter Douglas Architectural Products (China) Co Ltd - a subsidiary of Rotterdam-based Hunter Douglas Group - at 2805 Zhongchun Road.
The source of the contamination was unclear and the FDA and the district police were investigating the outbreak last night.
A total of 93 employees were struck down; two were in critical condition last night with another 26 suffering obvious symptoms, officials said.
The remainder were in stable condition.
The outbreak of food poisoning was reported about 2:30pm when employees who had eaten in the canteen began complaining of dizziness and headaches and showed symptoms such as bluish lips and fingers and nausea.
"We eat in the canteen every day and I believe it's safe," one affected employee told Shanghai Daily last night in the Minhang District Central Hospital. "The food tasted fine and shouldn't go bad in such low temperatures."
The employee, who asked not to be named, said staff ordered different dishes but most felt sick about one to two hours after eating.
Some 147 employees were sent to the Minhang District Central Hospital and the No.5 People's Hospital yesterday and 93 were diagnosed with food poisoning, said the district government last night. All patients would be kept in for at least 72 hours for observation, officials said.
