A guide to flowers of summer
THE Shanghai Botanical Garden has released a guide on summer flowers, covering lotus, swamp rosemallow, Chinese bellflower and the orange marmalade firecracker.
The garden has introduced a summer tulip from the Netherlands, and it is in full bloom. It flowers between June and October. It is in pink, purple and white.
Another flower, the Victoria amazonica water lily can support a 30 kilogram weight, and flowers three days.
On the first dusk, its flower is white with rich fragrance. On the second dusk, its flower is pink with a lighter fragrance. On the third morning, the flower is red and then it dies.
Dusk and early morning is the best time to appreciate the flower.
The garden has also taken a series of measures to protect plants from the harsh sun and heat gripping the city.
Antitranspirant is sprayed on plants and the soil is loosened to avoid water transpiration.
