Abused woman stands trial for husband’s murder

A 56-YEAR-OLD woman who killed her husband after years of domestic abuse stood on trial for murder at the Chongming County People’s Court yesterday.

Shi Meili, a villager in Chongming, pleaded for a lighter sentence in her final statement to the court.

A court official told Shanghai Daily that more than a 100 neighbors had signed a petition appealing for a lighter punishment for Shi who was abused by her husband for over 20 years.

Prosecutors said Shi was a victim of domestic violence. She had an argument with her husband Zhang Huichang on the night of May 19 and was again beaten up. No longer able to take the abuse, she hit Zhang on the head with a hammer the next day as he was sleeping.

Fearing that he would awake, Shi hit him twice again. Seeing him heavily bleeding, Shi asked her son to call an ambulance and rushed him to the hospital.

Zhang died in the hospital at noon the same day. Shi later surrendered to police.

Shi’s lawyer argued yesterday that she had suffered tremendous pain after years of abuse that had also caused psychological problems. Shi said she regretted her action.
