Acting teacher in spotlight over bribes for places claims
A TEACHER with the Shanghai Theater Academy took bribes of 220,000 yuan (US$35,860) from two aspiring actors to get them places at the college, prosecutors claimed yesterday.
The local court heard that the accused, a 31-year-old surnamed Zhuo who teaches at the acting department and gives classes to amateurs, was appointed as an admissions interviewer this year.
According to prosecutors, Zhuo demanded a bribe from a candidate surnamed Wang who he had taught to help Wang pass the interview, and received 120,000 yuan on January 24.
However, Zhuo claimed in court that the money was not a bribe but a wedding gift.
“I was about to marry my wife at that time and Wang said he would give me 120,000 yuan as a gift,” Zhuo told the court.
When the judge asked when his marriage took place, Zhuo said November 1, almost three months before the payment.
Prosecutors also claimed that Zhuo received 100,000 yuan from a candidate surnamed Pan, who subsequently passed his interview for the academy.
No verdict was announced by the court yesterday.
