African runners excel in 21km race

TWELVE thousand runners gathered in Pudong yesterday morning for the 2016 Shanghai International Half Marathon, which started at the Oriental Pearl TV Tower at 7am.

The event attracted 8,500 runners for the 21km half marathon and another 3,500 female runners for the 8-mile (12.87km) women’s run.

Kenya’s Abraham Cheroben, the top-ranked half-marathon runner in 2015, won the men’s half marathon in 1 hour and 2:37 minutes, while the women’s title went to Afera Godfay Berha of Ethiopia (1:11:54).

Participants followed a route running through the Lujiazui Area, Nanpu Bridge, Expo Park and Qiantan Park before reaching the finish line at the Oriental Sports Center. Most enjoyed the sunny weather, but a few heatstroke cases were reported.

According to Shanghai East Hospital, the event’s official medical partner, 663 participants asked for medical help during the race and seven were sent to hospital by ambulance.

According to organizer Shanghai East Best Lansheng Event Management Co, some of those sent to hospital had heatstroke, but were in stable condition after treatment.

Eighteen medical stations, 155 medical staff, 120 volunteers and 10 ambulances equipped with defibrillators were ready to provide medical support.

The men’s half marathon winner, Cheroben, who pocketed a US$10,000 prize, was just seconds faster than the silver and bronze medalists, fellow Kenyans Elijah Tirop Serem (1:02:40) and Amos Kiplimo Mitei (1:02:44). The women’s second- and third-placed runners, Linah Cheruto (1:11:56) and Agness Jeruto Barsosio (1:12:22), were also from Kenya.

Chinese runner Ge Yongqin won the women’s 8-mile, clocking 54:29 minutes.

A drawing system was used for registration in this year’s event. For the first time, the organizers invited 72 applicants who failed to get a place in the races to serve as volunteers at the event.

“This is another way to be a part of it,” said Zhu Hanyuan, who was not lucky enough to run the women’s half marathon, but volunteered at a supply station. “I hand water and fruit to the runners and of course cheer for them. I hope I will get cheered by others next year.”
