Airline apologizes for ticket stand-off
AIR China yesterday apologized for reselling tickets that led to an incident in which two passengers who had been “bumped off” forced their way onto the flight from Shanghai to Beijing.
Police had to intervene and an additional security check on the aircraft caused an almost two-hour delay.
The flagship carrier said staff at Hongqiao International Airport put seven passengers from a delayed Hainan Airlines onto Air China’s flight CA1518 to Beijing on Saturday without checking passengers numbers.
“An employee later realized that the seven seats had already been sold,” the airline said yesterday.
While five of the passengers were stopped at the boarding gate, two female passengers refused to stop and made their way onto the aircraft and occupied the seats on their boarding cards.
The women wouldn’t budge and police had to be called to remove them.
The Shanghai airport police yesterday said the two passengers, surnamed Fang and Zhao, appeared anxious and angry since their schedules had been delayed.
They received warnings at the airport police bureau.
The captain had to clear the aircraft for a thorough inspection afterward to ensure safety regulations were met, leading to delays.
The flight that was originally scheduled to take off at 5pm finally left Shanghai at 6:50pm.
“Air China deeply apologizes for the mistake and will improve staff training," the airline said.
