Airport Authority hit with big fine

THE Shanghai Airport Authority was fined 80,000 yuan (US$11,963) by aviation authorities after a Chinese teenager was found hiding in the cargo hold of an Emirates passenger jet that had flown from Pudong to Dubai in May.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China fined the Shanghai airport authority 30,000 yuan for failing to maintain the fences properly, eliminate safety risks and stop infiltration into the restricted area.
Shanghai was fined an additional 50,000 yuan for failing to take effective protection measures during the aircraft’s berthing at the airport.
“Shanghai Airport Authority has been found violating the civil aviation safety regulation after an investigation into the stowaway incident,” the East China Administration of the regulator announced yesterday.
The 16-year-old stowaway Xu Xiaojun from southwest China’s Sichuan Province sneaked into the cargo hold of Emirates flight EK303 on May 26, apparently to make a fortune by begging in Dubai. He was arrested by Dubai airport police right after the nine-hour flight.
Xu was sent back to China since he was a minor.
The administration has also banned Pudong International Airport from applying for new, extra or charter flights.
In a note to Shanghai Stock Exchange, the listed company said it had taken note of the regulator’s views and launched an overall inspection of the airports’ restricted areas and anti-invasion capability.
The company said it will improve facilities and management to ensure safety.
