Airport worker's theft punished

AN airport maintenance worker who stole cash and three gold bars worth more than 550,000 yuan (US$86,136) from a passenger's luggage on a carousel belt was sentenced to 11 years in prison, the Changning District People's Court said yesterday.

The convict, surnamed Wu, 24, was also fined 50,000 yuan, the court ruled. Prosecutors said Wu store three gold bars weighing 1.5 kilograms and 15,000 yuan in cash from checked luggage on a baggage carousel during a routine inspection at the Hongqiao International Airport on February 6.

The victim found the valuables were missing and reported it to airport police, the court heard.

After watching the surveillance records, police suspected Wu and searched his home, where they seized the stolen items the next day.
