Alarm as resident unearths live shell
THE fire department rushed to a home in Baoshan District yesterday morning when the resident discovered an unexploded shell while having some work done.
The device, which was 30cm long and 8.5cm wide, would have a blast radius of about 20 meters, the department said.
“Any strong strike could explode it, like if it was hit by a hammer,” an officer with the department’s special explosive force, surnamed Ji, told Shanghai Daily, He added that it probably failed to detonate on impact because it landed in mud.
Ji said it was difficult to determine who fired it or when due to the deterioration of the casing.
It will be kept in a special storage unit until it has been rendered safe, Ji said.
According to Ji, the force receives about 200 to 300 calls about suspected unexploded ordnance each year, most of them from people working on construction sites, but about two thirds turn out to be toys or other objects.
On Wednesday, a resident in Songjiang District found a suspected shell while moving house, but it was a false alarm.
