Alibaba helps identify fakes on its sites
E-COMMERCE firm Alibaba said yesterday that it has spent more than US$160 million since last year on efforts to prevent the sale of counterfeit products on its websites.
By monitoring stores that use its Taobao service, it has been able to alert police to those that sell fake goods, it said.
In one case, a tip-off led to Jiading District police closing down 10 sites that sold counterfeit juicers, 510 of which were confiscated.
All of the sites were operated by a man surnamed Shen, who told police he had been making fake juicers since the start of the year and had built up a network of distributors and wholesalers.
The companies sold a combined 6,000 juicers in the period and netted profits of more than 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million).
Alibaba said it penalized 131,000 sellers in the first nine months of the year and has worked with law enforcement agencies on more than 1,000 counterfeiting cases, leading to the arrests of 400 people.
