Animated film dubbed into local tongue
A NEW animated film based on the 1980s television series “Black Cat Detective” is the first of its kind to be dubbed into the Shanghai dialect, its producers said yesterday.
The movie, “Mr Black: Green Star,” was made by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, which also created the TV show.
A Mandarin version will be shown on August 7 and the Shanghainese version will hit screens a few weeks later, the company said.
The movie maintains the artistic style of the original series, but with a modern plot and some new characters, said studio official Wang Anyi.
“Many Shanghainese children these days can’t speak the local dialect, so we hope the film will promote its use,” she said, adding that translating the movie was quite tricky.
“We didn’t stick rigidly to the Mandarin script, but adapted things so that the words and images worked well together,” she said.
About a dozen voice artists and actors were involved in the dubbing process, Wang said.
Liu Mingang, a professor of Shanghai Normal University, said that using animation is a good way to stimulate young children’s interest in the vernacular.
“The dialect spoken by many young people in Shanghai is not standard, and some don’t speak it at all,” he said.
“Using animation is a good way to promote it,” he said.
