App developers target transport
APP developers are being invited to use their skills to improve the management of the city’s public transport.
The Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology yesterday launched the Shanghai Open Data Apps (SODA) contest, which is open to both companies and individuals.
For the first time ever, the government will make available real time data about the city’s public transport — from taxi and bus movements, to occupancy rates and conditions at parking facilities, it said.
“This is a big step for the government, which wants to share data in order to support the creation of a smart city,” said Zhu Zongyao, head of innovation at the commission.
As well as the transport competition, the government is planning to make data available in other areas, such as health care, he said.
More than 200 organizations are expected to take part in the SODA project, which is backed by a number of venture capital firms, said Zhang Baijun, from the China Industrial Design Institute, which is organizing the event.
