Appeal to help girl in lime burn accident

A 4-YEAR-OLD girl in neighboring Zhejiang Province, who suffered severe burns after falling into a pit of lime is still in a critical condition, doctors at a Shanghai hospital said yesterday.

The girl, known as Jiayu, who suffered 92 percent burns and could lose an eye, is now in urgent need of donations to pay for treatment, said her family.

Relatives said this will cost at least 2 million yuan (US$322,000) over the next three months.

“Our family can provide only 100,000 to 200,000 yuan,” Jiayu’s aunt, surnamed Wang, told Shanghai Daily.

Wang said that over the past three days, they have received about 600,000 yuan in donations both in and outside China, after local media reported the accident.

This is enough to cover the little girl’s initial surgery.

Jiayu was transferred to Changhai Hospital in Shanghai on August 7 after falling into a pool for mixing quicklime and water for building materials in front of her grandparents’ house in Kuangyan Town, in Cixi City.

The strongly alkaline hydrated lime in the mixture left her with severe burns.

Donations can be made through the Red Cross Society of China in Cixi City.
