Apple acts on iPhone battery troubles

THE Shanghai Consumers Association said Apple has agreed to replace the batteries in its iPhone 6 and 6S models while it investigates complaints the phones turn off and cannot be turned back on, after being approached by the association.

However, the company said it hadn't made such an arrangement.

"Apple is aware of a very small number of iPhone 6s users who have reported that their iPhones are unexpectedly turning off. We're working to get more information from these customers, and anyone with questions can contact AppleCare," the company said in an email sent to Shanghai Daily.

"We're also working with government agencies to help customers who have reached out to them with concerns,” the company said.

Users have reported the problem happens even despite battery levels showing a charge of 50-60 percent or the phone being plugged in for continuous charging.

The association said yesterday Apple had informed it the cause of the malfunction could only be confirmed after the phones are sent to the company’s US headquarters for tests.

But the company agreed to take temporary measures, including replacing the battery, to allow customers continue to use the devices, after other checks were conducted by users first, according to the association.

Apple service center staff said customers should first call the service hotline on 400-666-8800. After checking the serial number, service staff can conduct an online test that takes just minutes. If the battery is found not to be operating properly, the battery can be replaced.

If no problem was detected, the customer should try other measures such as reinstalling the operating system, the Apple staff said.

The iPhone 6 was introduced into the Chinese market in October, 2014, and 6S phones in September, 2015.

Hundreds of users in cities like Shanghai, Beijing,Tianjin, Shenyang and Chengdu have complained about the recent battery problems.
