Aqua plants clean up 鈥榬iver鈥 in Xuhui park
A DOWNTOWN park is using aqua plants to clean up a stinking man-made creek in an ecological experiment that has proved successful.
The 600-meter long artificial “river” in Xujiahui Park was built in 2002, but over the years the 10,000 square meters of stagnant water had been polluted. Though chemical liquids could clean the water, no fish could survive in it, making it look like one long swimming pool, said Zeng Jun, a park management authority with Xuhui District.
Then in 2012, a team of experts than introduced 20 aqua plants like bulrush, iris, calamus and water lily to absorb the abundant nutrient in the water. A 100-square-meter wetland was set up in the middle of the “river” with some more plants.
Fishes such as mosquitofish and grass carps were put into the water along with shrimps, snails and microbes to balance the ecological environment, Zeng said.
The eco-purifying trial proved successful after three years but incurred expenses of around 500,000 yuan (US$76,000), which the district government paid for, Zeng said.
“Entering the park now, visitors can feel the natural environment with the clear water and many wild egrets coming to eat fish in the river,” Zeng told Shanghai Daily.
