Aquarium to raise admission fee

A PLAN to increase the price of admission to Shanghai Ocean Aquarium by 30 yuan (US$4.85) for adults and 15 yuan for children from November has met with a mixed response.

“I won’t visit the aquarium because it’s too expensive,” said Wang Hongmei, the mother of a five-year-old boy.

“I took my son to the new Shanghai Natural History Museum, and that was only 30 yuan,” she said.

Local media worker Wendy Lu said she might try to visit the aquarium before the prices go up.

“160 yuan isn’t cheap, so I don’t want to pay an extra 30 yuan even if there are more things to see,” she said.

The operators of the tourist attraction in the Pudong New Area said the entrance fee will increase to 190 yuan, from 160 yuan, for adults, and to 125 yuan, from 110 yuan, for children.

An official from the aquarium said the price rise was necessary to finance the upgrading of exhibits and to cover a rising maintenance and wage bill.

An unnamed Internet user said: “Perhaps the operator is increasing prices to control the number of visitors.”
