Armed policemen to patrol the Metro
ARMED police will be patrolling Metro stations to beef up security, the Metro police said yesterday.
Another 200 police officers, including some in plainclothes, will be added to the existing force to patrol in major Metro stations and on trains every day.
Police officials declined to comment on whether the beefed up security is related to the upcoming G20 Summit in neighboring Hangzhou City, but did say that the measures were temporary.
Meanwhile, an intensive security inspection was conducted at Caoyang Road Station yesterday morning. Every passenger had to walk through a metal detector, their identification was checked by police officers against the system via portable devices, and their luggage was scanned by machines before they entered the station.
Similar intensive inspections have been held at more than 60 stations since the end of last year.
In addition to passengers entering the station, passengers transferring to different lines and those leave stations will be subject to spot inspections.
The Metro police said 13 fugitives have been caught as a result of the inspections since July.
