Armed snack stealing earns jail

A HUNGRY young man who robbed a local convenience store of a steamed corn on the cob worth 3.6 yuan (56 US cents) was sentenced to 10 months in prison and fined 1,000 yuan yesterday by the Pudong New Area People's Court.

Prosecutors said Li Wen, 20, threatened two shop clerks with a knife in a convenience store on Sanlin Road at about 2am on April 11.

He failed to get any money from the clerks. Instead, Li took a steamed corn on the cob from beside the cashier's table and ate it as he fled, which was an extension of the robbery, the court said.

Prosecutors said Li came to Shanghai in March in pursuit of a better job.

But he quit the jobs either because they required too much technical skill or because he could not endure demanding manual labor.

He slept under bridges and in Internet cafes until he spent the last penny he had. At that point he came up with the idea of robbing a convenience store.
