Arrest made over deadly hammer attack
A CITY man has been arrested for allegedly beating his mistress to death with a hammer over a debt dispute.
Luwan District prosecutors said yesterday that Zhang Zhibing, 48, was caught two days after killing the woman, a real estate agency owner, and would face a charge of murder.
Prosecutors said Zhang hit the victim about the head and face in a frenzied and public attack near the Dongtai Road Antique Market.
The victim Li Jing, 46, ran the agency on Dongtai Road and also offered a cash service on her POS machine to credit card holders for a commission.
Zhang met Li five years ago via such a transaction and the two soon became lovers, prosecutors said.
Li borrowed 120,000 yuan (US$17,575) from Zhang for stock investments in May last year, according to the accused.
Because they had a good relationship at that time, Zhang did not seek an IOU, he told prosecutors.
Li initially paid back 15,000 yuan but she delayed paying the balance.
On August 20, Zhang decided to kill Li if she refused to pay because a debt of his own was due to fall in September, prosecutors heard.
Zhang, wearing a cap and sunglasses as a makeshift disguise, went to Li's agency carrying the hammer.
He saw piles of cash in Li's drawer but she refused to pay, Zhang said.
He threatened to hit Li but the victim allegedly taunted him, saying he did not have the courage.
"I was enraged and hit her with the hammer impulsively," he said.
After Li fell to floor, Zhang continued to hit her with the hammer, prosecutors said. He took about 25,000 yuan in cash from the agency.
Police officers caught Zhang onAugust 22 at a long-distance bus station in Yangpu District as he was about to leave the city.
