Arrest over college town sex attacks

A 25-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested over a string of sexual assaults on young women in Songjiang College Town.

The suspect, surnamed Guan, will be charged with molesting four women, prosecutors in Songjiang District said yesterday.

According to prosecutors, Guan committed the first assault on April 22 when he saw a woman walking alone near the college town’s sports center.

He followed the woman before attacking her, squeezing her throat and grabbing her hair, and sexually assaulting her, said prosecutors.

Then on June 8, in the same location, Guan is said to have pulled a student’s hair and sexually assaulting her while she spoke on her phone.

Guan is said to have fled when the victim cried out for help.

However, the next day Guan is alleged to have targeted a student on Wenhui Road in the college town, following her while he masturbated.

When the young woman realized what he was doing, she cried out, causing Guan to run away, said prosecutors.

However, as he fled he encountered another student and performed the same act while following her, it is claimed.

Guan was stopped by a male pedestrian who called police, said prosecutors. But Guan struggled free and escaped before police arrived.

Police held Guan at a bus stop on Wenhui Road on June 11.

Prosecutors urged the victims of such attacks to report them to police.

In this case, only the first victim came forward, with the others keeping quiet out of shame or fear of reprisals.
