Arrival of banned goods spikes

CUSTOMS authorities have seen a 50 percent hike in confiscations of items banned in China, including certain meats and plants, a stark increase attributed to overseas shipments coming in after Chinese went on a Black Friday shopping spree online.

Parcels arriving from overseas are increasing as websites have started their year-end sales and promotions, the Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau told STV news yesterday, adding that parcels from Europe, the United States and Japan were particularly common.

Goods ordered around Black Friday, which falls on the last Friday of November, have started to arrive and led to an increase of overseas parcels of 30 percent.

Many parcels, however, don’t make it through inspections, as often oblivious shoppers order goods that are officially banned from import, including certain meats, plants and yogurts, an official said. Among the confiscated items was a plush toy stuffed with lavender.
