Attractive pouch for traditional medicine
THOSE wishing to drive away insects, viruses or bad luck have a decorative new packaging option to choose from on their next visit to the traditional Chinese medicine shop.
At one store on Shaanxi Rd N. yesterday afternoon, customers were admiring eye-catching pouches in a variety of colors, sizes and shapes on display at prices ranging from 10 to 68 yuan (US$9).
At Shanghai Ley’s Pharmaceutical Co’s online shop, the most popular pouch, shaped like a lotus, was snapped up by more than 1,000 customers in one month.
Similar products are also available at some local medical facilities such as Longhua Hospital.
“The tradition of using pouches for auspicious, refreshing, antimould and deworming purposes can be traced back more than 2,000 years ago to the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) in China,” said Huang Jingshan, a doctor at Longhua.
“But the medicinal formulas put in them have changed over time.”
Modern medical researchers have found that aromatic Chinese medicines contain rich volatile oils, which have antibacterial and antiviral functions, reducing the risk of contracting the common cold and other illnesses. However, doctors warn that there is no evidence to prove that it can prevent people from getting the flu.
Huang also said pregnant women and people who have allergies or infectious diseases should consult their doctor before using TCM pouches.
