Aunt admits suffocating, dismembering baby boy
A WOMAN admitted in court yesterday suffocating her 4-month-old nephew, hiding his body in a washing machine and dismembering it.
The defendant, surnamed Lei, a 23-year-old Sichuan Province native, appeared at Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court, charged with intentional homicide.
Lei admitted in court suffocating the child on November 24 last year but insisted that she did not mean to kill him.
She also admitted hiding the body in a washing machine and cutting it up in an attempt to dispose of it.
Lei told the court that she felt her in-laws preferred her sister-in-law and decided to get revenge by hurting her sister-in-law’s 4-month-old son.
“I confess my crime and I’m willing to take the consequences,” a tearful Lei said in court.
Lei was left alone in the home in Sijing in Songjiang District with her 1-year-old daughter and her nephew while family members were at their breakfast stall, the court heard.
She took her sleeping nephew into the toilet and admitted in court that she was planning to “take vengeance” on him by “hitting and pinching him.”
However, she was interrupted when her father-in-law returned unexpectedly, the court heard.
Fearing he would be suspicious, Lei said that in a panic she covered the baby’s nose and mouth with her hand to stop him from making a sound.
Seeing that the child had stopped moving, Lei said she hid his body in a broken washing machine.
“I covered his mouth only to prevent him from making noise, but didn’t kill him intentionally. I beg his parents for forgiveness,” Lei told the court.
A massive search was launched but three days later, the baby’s body was discovered in the washing machine by his mother.
Lei admitted killing the child and was detained by police the next day.
She was arrested by the Songjiang District People’s Procuratorate on December 10.
While Lei is from Sichuan, the other family members come from Anhui Province and she felt she was treated unfairly by her in-laws.
Lei said she and her mother-in-law had a quarrel a few days before the incident.
Her defence pleaded for a lighter punishment as Lei has a young daughter.
A verdict will be returned at a later date.
