Australia鈥檚 digital gateway celebrates a year in China
THIS week, Australia is being showcased throughout China during the Australia Week in China celebrations which feature a trade delegation of over 1,000 Australian corporate and government delegates led by Australian Trade and Investment Minister Steven Ciobo. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will join the delegation in Shanghai today before flying onto Beijing. Many activities during the week will focus on improving insights, understanding and engagement between the two countries.
Coinciding with Australia Week is the first anniversary of the launch of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) information-rich China web portal AustraliaPlus.cn, which was established in 2015 in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. The website provides stories and information in Chinese language, with a strong focus on Australia education, business, property, travel and visas, health, lifestyle, innovation and culture. AustraliaPlus.cn is hosted in China, which means its performance is highly optimized for audiences seeking quick and easy access to content.
Highlights through the year on the vibrant and informative website and its social media platforms have included celebrity interviews with Chinese superstars such as Li Na when she visited her Australian fans during the Australian Open Tennis Championships this year. Chinese rock star Wang Feng was also interviewed by AustraliaPlus.cn while he was in Australia. Testimonials of Chinese university students living in Australia are a popular feature on the website along with coverage of annual Chinese New Year spectaculars across Australia. Sometimes more unusual Australian stories delight visitors to the site such as koalas caught on camera holding up traffic.
“The site is popular with Chinese audiences in China and abroad and aims to provide an entertaining gateway between China and Australia and to contribute to the growing China-Australia friendship,” said Lynley Marshall, CEO of ABC International, currently in Shanghai for the web portal’s first anniversary celebrations. “It’s part of our long-standing commitment to China and to working collaboratively with our China media partners,” she said.
The ABC and Shanghai Daily have a cooperative relationship and have been collaborating on sharing and exchanging online stories between the two countries as a way of building international cooperation and understanding.
